What is Sista Business

Sista Business is a Cultural Wellbeing program supporting Aboriginal girls in Years 7–10 on Gumbaynggirr Country.

This transformative program offers a safe and nurturing space for girls to come together, connect, and be supported as they navigate the early stages of womanhood. At its heart, Sista Business supports each young woman to reconnect with her own centre, while deepening her connection to culture, community, and Country.

Blending cultural knowledge with personal development, the program weaves together women’s circle practices, conscious creativity, and meaningful life skills in a way that is both grounded and empowering.

How it Works?

Monthly Sessions: Each month we meet to explore a key theme centered around personal growth, cultural connection, and shared empowerment.

Held in Multiple Locations:

  • Some sessions take place in the local Mid North Coast high schools.

  • Whilst other sessions are held on Country, allowing the girls to deepen their connection with nature, culture, and themselves.

What We Do:

Each session incorporates a creative cultural activity and offers a gift for the girls to take home, serving as a reminder of their journey and the collective strength of the group. This program is about focusing on what unites us rather than what divides us, creating a sacred space for our girls to share openly and grow.

Holding Space for Our Girls

In Sista Business, holding space means walking alongside each girl in her journey without judgment, offering unconditional support, and allowing her to be exactly who she is. This is a space where all girls are seen, heard, and valued.

Through this program, we aim to empower the next generation of women by providing a foundation of self-awareness, connection, and empowerment, ensuring they know they are never alone on their path.

Last week the Sista Business girls at Macksville came together for another beautiful session. We took time to reflect on our recent On Country Day, sharing thoughts and feelings from that experience and what it meant to each of them. The girls also spent time creating their shirts for the Muurraby Tree Dance. It was also very special to welcome Aunty Belinda, who joined us again in her role as Aboriginal Elder Woman supporting the Macksville group. We are grateful to have her walking alongside the girls and sharing in this space. We continue to see strong and consistent attendance, with 11 girls regularly showing up each week. This kind of commitment speaks to the importance of having a space where the girls feel safe, connected and supported. 🍃Sista Business - Combined On Country Gathering 🍃 Last week the Sista Business girls from Bellingen, Macksville and Nambucca came together On Country for a very special day of connection, culture and community. The girls gathered to listen and learn as Aunty Pauline shared the Muurraby Tree story, local history and her own memories of growing up in this area. In the afternoon the girls spent time weaving, painting and learning the Muurraby Tree Dance on Country, sharing laughter, creativity and connection. A very special thank you to the people who made this day possible. 💚 To Aunty Pauline, for generously sharing her knowledge, stories and guidance with the girls. 💚 To Sophia, who taught the girls the Muurraby Tree Dance and brought such energy and joy to the day. 💚 And to the wonderful support team who walked alongside the girls throughout the gathering ~ Aunty Felicia and Nicola (Aboriginal Education Officers), Hayley, Tammy, Tash and Anna (Support Teachers), and Naomi from Becoming You. Days like this remind us how powerful it is when young women come together on Country, supported by culture and community. Why does a program like Sista Business matter? Because when young women are given a space that feels safe, welcoming and connected to culture ~ they show up. Over the past few weeks, we have welcomed girls from across our local high schools into circle, and the feedback they are sharing reminds us how important these spaces are. Some of the girls have said: ✨ “Sista Business is AMAZING! There is nothing I would change.” ✨ “It’s good to reconnect with culture and clear my head.” ✨ “I love Sista Business and it is a safe place for me.” ✨ “Amazing. Life saver.” ✨ “Sista Business is the reason I came to school today.” These words mean everything. When girls feel seen, supported and connected to culture, something powerful happens. They begin to relax, open up, build friendships and find their place within the group. We have been so encouraged to see record numbers of girls attending regularly across the schools, and we are looking forward to our first combined On Country gathering next week where the girls will come together to learn, connect and celebrate. Yesterday was a very special day. I held a Sista Business circle with a group of Year 7 girls… and my own daughter was sitting in the circle. One of the quiet reasons this program was created was for this moment. Years ago, I hoped that by the time my daughter and my nieces reached high school, there would be a space like this waiting for them — a place where they would feel safe, supported, and connected to who they are. Today that hope became real. Watching the girls sit together, share stories, listen and laugh reminded me why this work matters so much. High school can be a big transition. These circles help the girls find their feet, their voice, and each other. Sista Business is more than a program. It is a community of care wrapped around our young women as they grow. Our gatherings create a safe and supportive space where girls can strengthen connection to themselves, their culture, their community and Country. Each session includes: • a Yarning Circle • cultural creative activities • teachings shared by local Elders • and yummy healthy snacks Through circle, culture and community, the girls are reminded of something deeply important ~ they belong, and they are not alone.
