What is Sista Business

Sista Business currently delivers cultural wellbeing programs for Aboriginal girls in Years 7–10 across selected NSW schools on Gumbaynggirr Country.

Since 2024, we have been creating safe, nurturing spaces where girls can come together, connect, and be supported as they navigate the early stages of womanhood. At its heart, Sista Business strengthens each young woman’s sense of identity, belonging, and emotional wellbeing.

Beginning in 2027, Sista Business will expand to offer two streams:

Mainstream Wellbeing & Inclusion Pilot ~ Schools & Community Groups

A new wellbeing and inclusion offering designed for all girls in Years 7–10. This pilot supports emotional regulation, resilience, belonging, and identity safety through structured circle practice, guided wellbeing discussions, and creative expression. Schools and community groups can engage for a single session, one term, a semester, or a full 12‑month program.

Cultural Stream ~ Aboriginal Girls Program

A transformative cultural wellbeing program supporting Aboriginal girls to reconnect with their centre while deepening their connection to culture, community, and Country. Sessions weave cultural knowledge with women’s circle practices, conscious creativity, and meaningful life skills in a way that is grounded, respectful, and empowering.

Sista Business programs are delivered through structured wellbeing sessions that combine circle practice, guided discussion, and conscious creative activities. Schools and community groups can engage with Sista Business in a way that suits their needs ~ through single sessions, term‑based delivery, semester programs, or a full 12‑month journey.

Each session is designed to help girls feel grounded, connected, and confident as they navigate the early stages of womanhood.

Holding Space for Our Girls

In Sista Business, holding space means walking alongside each girl with respect, care, and non‑judgment. It means creating an environment where she can show up exactly as she is — seen, heard, and valued.

Our programs empower the next generation of young women by strengthening self‑awareness, connection, resilience, and emotional wellbeing. Every girl leaves knowing she is supported, she belongs, and she is not alone on her path.

Last week the Sista Business girls at Bellingen gathered for our first session of the term. Together, we entered a space of reflection ~ taking time to pause and consider what the girls are learning about themselves, their strengths, and their journey so far. We revisited the Sista Business journey by looking back through photos and memories from earlier sessions. The girls selected images to include in their journals, creating meaningful reflections of their experiences and growth along the way. We also spent time reflecting on the recent Buluunngal Festival, revisiting the dance and speaking about what it felt like to stand together and share that experience as a group. For our creative activity, the girls worked with clay and natural elements gathered from the school grounds, shaping bowls inspired by their connection to self, creativity and Country. This week the Sista Business girls at Nambucca gathered for our first session of the term. During the session the girls were invited into a space of reflection ~ taking time to pause and consider what they are learning about themselves, their strengths, and their journey so far. We spent time revisiting the Sista Business journey, looking back through photos and moments from earlier sessions. The girls selected images to include in their journals, creating a personal record of their growth and experiences. We also reflected on the recent Buluunngal Festival, watching the dance and speaking about what it felt like to step forward and share that moment together. For our creative activity, the girls worked with clay and natural elements gathered from the school’s native bush garden, shaping bowls that reflected their connection to self and Country. 🍃 Buluunggal Festival 🍃 On the weekend, the Sista Business girls came together to dance at the Buluunggal Festival ~ sharing their learning with community for the very first time. It was a truly special moment. At the beginning, there were nerves… but as the girls stepped forward together and began to dance, something shifted. By the end, they were standing proud ~ smiling, connected, and celebrating what they had achieved together. This moment was the fruition of so much that has been building over the past months in our Sista Business sessions. The girls created their own shirts, learned weaving, and came together on Country to learn the Muurraby Tree Dance, connected to the story shared by Aunty Pauline. To see it all come to life in front of community was incredibly powerful. We would like to acknowledge and thank those who made this possible: 🍃 Sophia, for guiding the girls in learning the dance ~ holding such a large group with care and dedication 🍃 Nicola (AEO, Bellingen High School), for the many hours spent weaving earrings during the school holidays for the girls to wear during the dance 🍃 All Aboriginal Education Officers and school support staff who supported the girls every step of the way 🍃 BecomingU, for supporting the day 🍃 Aunty Jenni for all her ongoing help and support for the Sista Business Program And most of all, the girls ~ for their courage, commitment and willingness to step forward. Last week the Sista Business girls at Macksville came together for another beautiful session. We took time to reflect on our recent On Country Day, sharing thoughts and feelings from that experience and what it meant to each of them. The girls also spent time creating their shirts for the Muurraby Tree Dance. It was also very special to welcome Aunty Belinda, who joined us again in her role as Aboriginal Elder Woman supporting the Macksville group. We are grateful to have her walking alongside the girls and sharing in this space. We continue to see strong and consistent attendance, with 11 girls regularly showing up each week. This kind of commitment speaks to the importance of having a space where the girls feel safe, connected and supported. 🍃Sista Business - Combined On Country Gathering 🍃 Last week the Sista Business girls from Bellingen, Macksville and Nambucca came together On Country for a very special day of connection, culture and community. The girls gathered to listen and learn as Aunty Pauline shared the Muurraby Tree story, local history and her own memories of growing up in this area. In the afternoon the girls spent time weaving, painting and learning the Muurraby Tree Dance on Country, sharing laughter, creativity and connection. A very special thank you to the people who made this day possible. 💚 To Aunty Pauline, for generously sharing her knowledge, stories and guidance with the girls. 💚 To Sophia, who taught the girls the Muurraby Tree Dance and brought such energy and joy to the day. 💚 And to the wonderful support team who walked alongside the girls throughout the gathering ~ Aunty Felicia and Nicola (Aboriginal Education Officers), Hayley, Tammy, Tash and Anna (Support Teachers), and Naomi from Becoming You.
